New Work by Canadian Watercolour Artist Brent McGillivray

Brent McGillivray brings has a unique and interesting style and subject matter for his masterful artwork. He is currently a member of the Directors Guild of Canada. During his work as a set designer and art director in the film industry in Toronto from 1993 to the present, Brent has recorded through photography many vanishing historic sites and graphics. These have inspired him to create paintings and prints of disappearing urban and rural artifacts  By using a photo-realistic style with water colours, gouache and acrylics the viewer is intrigued and drawn to the image for a closer study.

Brent has just added some of his more recent works to MadeInHaliburton.ca and they are truly inspiring in their colours and uniqueness of image. Please take a look as they speak for themselves.

Achtemichuck went to art school in Winnipeg. This exhibition includes small, alluring paintings in gouache on silk mostly of Achtemichuck’s backyard. Predominantly each work has the moon playing a prominent role. The moon is not easy to paint but Achtemichuck expertly uses the media to give that soft, glowing quality and strong contrast needed. “Observation, then memory, guides the development of the images. Elements are made more important/dominant by using composition, colour and simplification,” says Achtemichuck

“As a print-maker, I use etching, aquatint, dry point, chine colle, and hand colouring to explore my subjects. Every etching and dry point is hand wiped and hand printed. Often I hand colour my images using watercolour, pastel, or wax medium. Typically, I print on traditional Western papers, handmade Japanese papers, and textiles. I am a Toronto-based print-maker, visual artist, and educator. My practice includes drawing, painting, and printmaking. My interest is in landscape and how our perception of the landscape helps us define who we think we are. I am particularly drawn to water – especially fens, bogs, streams, rivers and lakes as well as the life these systems support. However, I am increasingly concerned about not only our water, but the native plant species and wildlife which our water systems sustain. Like our environment, these things need to be cared for, protected, and nurtured.” says Menard

The Canadian Blues Legends series continues at the Dominion Hotel in Minden on Saturday evening April 27th. Those ‘Joint Chiefs of Soul’ Lance Anderson on Hammond B3 organ and percussionist Mike Sloski will be back, joined by special guest Stan Russell on guitar, for an evening of fabulous blues, jazz and funky soul music. Greg Pichnej, a Canadian Photographer, has just joined forces with MadeInHaliburton.ca to market his wonderful images. He has generously provided us with a selection of 5 images of the Haliburton region that can be used as a screensaver on your computer. Simply register on our facebook page by clicking the “Sign Up Form” button on the right side just under the header image.

“Greg” Pichnej was born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Following a fine arts curriculum at Montreal’s renowned Ecole des Beaux-Arts, he started his profession in photography in 1968. In 1970 economic realities encouraged a career realignment into the emerging environments of computer operations and telecommunications. Photography remained a priority passion that was never tarnished by the mere reality of earning a living.

Greg enjoys his life on this planet in “cottage” country, originally in the Quebec Laurentians and now, Ontario’s beautiful Haliburton Highlands. Retired from the corporate rat race since 2000, he was finally able to refocus his creativity on capturing unique images of nature. His mission is to convey a feeling of that “special moment” in his photographs and bring that feeling to you the viewer.

His work has only just been uploaded to MadeInHaliburton.ca and he already has reviews on two of his products that sing his praises as a photographer:

One reviewer says of the photograph titled “Man In Canoe”:  ”Love this photo, it looks like me on my canoe, great lighting, love the rising sun in the background, another one of Greg’s fine pictures.”

A reviewer of the picture titled “Majestic Tree Morning Sun #3″ states, “this framed picture shows exactly what a cottage scene looks like when you are just paddling around your lake. I really enjoy Greg’s photos and I have been a big fan of his photography over many years. I have a collection of Greg’s photo cards and in fact this image is one of my favorites. Whenever I send it out to friends or family they always make very positive comments, so peaceful so cottagey.”

Greg is a member of the Arts Council~Haliburton Highlands and lives in the Haliburton Highlands during the warm months of the year.

It’s a full day of immersion in the arts – your day includes breakfast, lunch, wine reception, art demonstrations, an auction, and participation in an arts workshop.
