Catherine MacLellan Plays Minden United Church

Catherine MacLellan Plays Minden United Church

Catherine MacLellan will be gracing the stage at the Minden United Church on May 24th, 2013 starting at 7:30 pm. This is one in the Haliburton County Folk Society 2012/13 concert series. If you have never attended a musical event in this church setting you are in for a treat! The acoustics are incredible and the music fills the chapel in an ethereal way.

If you have never heard Catherine perform then you are in for a real treat. The following paragraph is from her website:

“Her sweet tones weft gracefully throughout pensive and internalized lyrics that ponder, in the most elegant terms, the most relatable of internal dilemmas—balancing work and family, love blooming and fading away, and evaluating one’s own personal strength. Throughout the 14 tracks onSilhouette, it’s felt that you’re listening to the voice of an every-woman with a gift for expressing with poise the most personal of internal conflicts.”

Folk Alliance Conference brings International Talent to Toronto

Have you ever wondered how talented musicians become well enough known to tour internationally? Well one answer to this question for folk musicians is the Folk Alliance annual conference that just took place in Toronto over the past 4 days. Thousands of musicians and promoters of musical events converge on the conference location and the musicians perform in a variety of venues over the course of the 4 days, giving the promoters (and anyone else interested in attending) an opportunity to see them perform and decide if they are right for their performance venue.

I was privileged to be able to attend this conference this past weekend and see the array of talent. There were 10 concurrent “official showcases” happening from 6 pm until 10:30 pm each of the 4 evenings. Each performer has a half hour to “wow” the audience (including their set up time). If you like what you see, or if you simply couldn’t get to their showcase because you cannot be in 10 places at once, you can also catch an artist in one of the over one hundred (or so) private performances that occur in hotel rooms between 10:30 pm and 3:30 am each night. The private performances are also a place for emerging artists to get some exposure if they could not secure a spot on the list of official showcases.

Needless to say I am now exhausted but, also thrilled to have seen so much talent in such a short period of time. I have my favourites who I hope will be picked up by the Haliburton County Folk Society or the Forest Festival for their next season of concerts. Now I sit back and wait to see who they will select!

Folk Alliance Conference Toronto — don’t miss opportunity to come tonight!

The Folk Alliance Conference is in Toronto this year instead of Memphis … thousands of people associated with the music industry are here and the public has a unique opportunity to attend the Showcases tonight for a donation of about $20 a head. Why would you miss this opportunity .. hope to see you there tonight.

If you miss the chance to see these amazing international performers on Toronto turf why not plan to come north to the Haliburton Highlands and take in a performance during this year’s folk concert series? Buy your tickets online. Seeing talent in person is a much better experience than listening to the radio or a CD … see what Chad had to say about the last Folk Society event with The Once.

A Concert-ed Effort
It is hard to know if winter has decided to settle in yet or not, but while Mother Nature tries to make up her mind, rest assured that there is
one thing you can always count on: excellent live music in Haliburton County!
As you heard in our last e-newsletter, The Folk Society has just launched a concert series along with our house concert Home Routes providing a wide range of musical styles in a variety of venues on weekends and weekdays over the next several months. Winter Folk Camp, our largest musical event of the season, is coming up and this year’s event promises to be a great one.
As always, we support our local and emerging musicians so come on out and support our musicians when they open for concerts or offer their own independent show. We also facilitate CD sales for local musicians, provide recording subsidies, maintain sound equipment and present an open stage.  All of this keeps us busy.
Thankfully we have a dedicated committee  including Kris Kadwell, Don Gage, Ian Pay, Walt Tose, Eric Lilius, Bill Hutson, Trina West, Laurel McCauleyn, Barrie Martin, Art Theberge, Daniela Pagliaro, Donna Gagnon, Dianne Hagerman, Sean Pennylegion (Artistic Director) and Thom Lambert.
We hope you enjoy the concerts we are presenting and all the other music being presented by others.

Imminently – The Once
Such Fine Harmonies

Date: Feb 7, 2013

Location: Minden United Church, 22 Newcastle Street, Minden
Tickets: $25 and $20 for students and members. Children under 12 free
Available at Organic Times in Minden, Photo Shop in Haliburton or on-line atwww.madeinhaliburton.ca

Named for a unique Newfoundland phrase that means ‘imminently’, now is indeed the time for The Once.

From their beginnings as three actors who also loved to sing together, The Once has embraced a different vision of Newfoundland music. Their sounds do not come from the noisy pubs and dockside taverns that fuel so much of the Island’s energy. Instead, their music comes from a quieter and more thoughtful place. Hope and tragedy are intertwined in their music, whether they are singing an old lament from World War I, original songs that speak of love defeated, or tasteful songs from the artists whose music inspires them.

“Whether they keep it a cappella or pile on layers of accordion, bouzouki, mandolin and guitar, each track is a treat. Geraldine Hollett’s strong, clear voice and the rich vocal harmonies of bandmates Phil Churchill and Andrew Dale brim with passion and warmth…It’s time for the rest of the country to listen up.”

  Ritchie Stearns and Rosie Newton

Ah, how we all love the house concert. Our next one features Richie Stearns & Rosie Newton on February 14. There is no finer pairing than the banjo and fiddle in the world of Old Time and Appalachian Folk Music. Whether it is played today or heard in recordings of days gone by, the banjo and fiddle belong together and form the very heart of traditional, acoustic music as created on this side of the Atlantic in the south.

These two fine players both hail from New York State and have been creating music with other accomplished, traditional players such as The Horseflies (Richie) and The Pearly Snaps (Rosie) and are now together playing as this incredible duo. Their sparse and unsullied approach to their music creates a sound that pulls the listener in to an intimate realm that is lilting, driving, urgent and soothing all at the same time. Richie’s use of syncopation and rhythm creates musical tension and release that is complimented by Rosie’s flawless fiddling that is pure and sweet one moment and raw and stinging the next.

Anyone who hears these two will feel the strength of the music as alive and breathing right now while honouring all of the fiddle and banjo players who have gone before and those who will come after. I had the good fortune of meeting Richie Stearns in July of 2012 after seeing him perform with several bands at The Grassroots Festival outside of Ithaca, NY and have seen live footage of Rosie Newton playing and am delighted that The Haliburton Folk Society is bringing them to the Highlands.

This house concert will be a unique opportunity for those who attend to be moved and transported to a time and space before technology and modernism….to a time and space of wire and wood and sound. Don’t miss Richie Stearns and Rosie Newton.
