About the Artist:
Barbara Joy was born in Fort William, Ontario - now known as Thunder Bay. She is the eldest of six children and the daughter of a RCAF pilot - a career that provided unique opportunities to discover, first hand, the diverse landscape and people of Canada, all of which became an integral part of the artist that is evident in her work today. Barbara Joy began her clay studies in 1971 and in 1979, she opened her home-based studio-gallery in the Village of Haliburton, nestled in a cedar grove, high atop a scenic hillside overlooking the heart of the Haliburton Highlands. Barbara Joy's love of the rugged, natural beauty of Haliburton and her desire to unite beauty and function is evident in her distinctive glazing techniques and designs which are simple in form, yet elegant in style.
About Her Art:
Her work is mainly wheel thrown but she longs to continue to explore new ideas and incorporate them into her work. The work shown here is called soft slab work. The clay is altered to make functional pieces. All of the work is oven proof, microwave and dishwasher safe. All work is made with a high fire white stoneware clay and porcelain. Each piece of her work is signed and scriptures are used. The most noteworthy is Isaiah 64:8 "The Lord is the potter and we are the clay".
