About the Organization:The mandate of the Haliburton County Folk Society (HCFS) is to foster an appreciation of and participation in folk music in Haliburton County by promoting folk and acoustic roots music opportunities; bringing performers and audiences together; providing a venue for local and travelling performers and songwriters; encouraging young artists and musicians; providing creative and financial support for musical ventures; and partnering with other folk societies and other performing arts groups. The Haliburton County Folk Society (HCFS) began informally in 1996 as a group of community members playing music for and with each other. A small core of individuals came together in 1999 to form the 'official' Society, with the mission to promote folk and acoustic roots music in Haliburton County. Since 1999, the HCFS has hosted a regular Open Stage, presented a growing list of live concerts, and acted as co-presenter of live music at a host of arts-related and charitable events around the county. The Haliburton County Folk Society demonstrates its commitment to youth through an annual scholarship through Haliburton Highlands Secondary School, having youth representation on its Board and providing subsidies for music recording. As a pioneer in creating a folk 'scene' in the Haliburton Highlands, the HCFS has also helped create employment opportunities for local musicians, audio technicians and facilities, and sources of revenue for local businesses. HCFS is a member and project of the Haliburton County Community Cooperative Inc. (HCCC), a part of the Haliburton County Community Cooperative, a non-profit organization working for the benefit of members and the social, economic, cultural and environmental development of Haliburton County. The HCFS is a member the Arts Council - Haliburton Highlands, Ontario Council of Folk Festivals, and Haliburton Performing Arts. The HCFS has received funding from the Haliburton County Development Corporation, the Fresh Start! Program, and the Canadian Arts Presentation Fund For more information on the Haliburton County Folk Society: www.haliburtonfolk.com | info@haliburtonfolk.com | 705.754.FOLK (3655)
